Cultural Diversity, Safety and Inclusion in Aquatics and Lifesaving

This course is designed to strengthen cultural awareness and support respectful, effective engagement with multicultural communities at aquatic facilities and in swimming and lifesaving programs. 
The modules cover cultural differences and similarities, cross-cultural communication, cultural adaptation, cultural safety and population trends and their impact in Australia. Individuals doing the course will gain practical skills and culturally specific knowledge for use in the workplace and everyday life. 
There are 6 modules in total and it should take around two hours to complete.  Modules 1-5 were developed by SBS, whereas module 6 was developed by Royal Life Saving and contextualises key information to aquatic facilities and swimming and lifesaving programs.

  2. Dimensions of Cultural Diversity (25 min - SBS)
  3. Cross-Cultural Communication (30 min - SBS)
  4. Cultural Adaptation (20 min - SBS)
  5. Australia by the Numbers (20 min - SBS)
  6. Cultural Safety and Inclusion in Aquatics and Lifesaving (20 min - RLS)

 
The module forms part of Royal Life Saving’s professional development suite for the aquatic industry and can be completed at your own pace. A certificate of completion is issued on successful finish.


 

Introduction:

It’s easy to complete the program from Royal Life Saving, the Cultural Diversity Course is online, allowing you the freedom to complete the course when and where it suits. It should only take three hours and it’s not necessary to complete it in one go. The Program is available via the Royal Life Saving learning management system, with support to help you along the way.

Target Audience:

Individuals who complete the program will gain practical skills and cultural specific knowledge for use in the workplace and everyday life. By improving verbal and non-verbal communication, individuals and mangers will be better able to address diverse workforces and customers, leading to better management.
Ultimately the key to dealing with cultural diversity is building mutually respectful relationships.

Pre-requisites: Nil (however this course is designed for existing Swim Teacher)

Participants will require a level of English to be able to give and receive instructions‚ read signage, read content and complete questionnaires. LLN skill set of level 3 in writing and reading is minimum requirement for this course.
