Course: Aqua Exercise Instructor
Aqua exercise instructors are tasked with leading aquatic fitness classes at aquatic facilities. They design and deliver engaging workouts tailored to participants’ fitness levels and goals, emphasising water-based exercises for strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular health.
Instructors ensure the safety of participants during sessions, provide guidance on proper form and technique, and may also assist with program development and participant management. They may be called on to assist in rescue and first aid.
Pre-requisite:
- HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
- Sufficient health and fitness to be able to able to perform aqua instruction and perform water rescues
Minimum age: 16 years
Course Length: 3 days (plus pre course and post course work)
Units of Competency:
Upon successful completion you will obtain the following units of competence:
- HLTWHS001 Participate in workplace health & safety
- SISCAQU020 Perform Water Rescues
- SISFFIT038 Plan group water-based exercise sessions
- SISFFIT039 Instruct group water-based exercise sessions
- SISFFIT048 Use anatomy and physiology knowledge to support safe and effective water-based exercise
Level of English: A reasonable level of English is required to be able to complete this course successfully

Introduction:
The information provided here will assist you in deciding if the course selected is the right course for you.
It is assumed that participants are sufficiently physically fit and healthy to undertake this course. The following physical activities will occur during the course unless you advise of any physical difficulties or limitations: kneeling‚ bending over‚ crouching‚ standing‚ leaning‚ sitting, pushing, lifting weights, swimming long distances, towing, diving, carrying and other physical activity.
Learning Methods:
Participants will require the following for the face-to-face component:
- Photo Identification (i.e. Drivers Licence)
- Your Unique Student Identifier (www.usi.gov.au)
- Appropriate clothing‚ sunscreen‚ bathers and towel
- Any drinks‚ meals and/or snacks you may need
Pre-Course: Participants are required to complete some online work (including learning and assessment activities) and a pre-course workbook before the face-to-face component. The pre-course work will involve you participating in at least two aqua fitness sessions and satisfactorily completing a report.
Face-to-Face: Participants are required to attend the face-to-face component‚ The face to face course includes theory and practical assessments.
Post course work: You will have activities that you will have to successfully complete in a workplace.(including design sessions and deliver these under supervision of a qualified Aqua Fitness Instructor).
